I already updated the maps. How can I tell if the firmware is the latest version?
Fortunately, it's pretty easy. Garmin has a program called Web Updater which communicates with Garmin's servers and notifies you when there is a firmware update for your device. You can download it for free at the link below.
How often should I update the software for my Garmin nuvi?

I see it’s kind of expensive to do so, about $65 bucks.
As often as you need the device to be up-to-date.

Today Garmin globally announced about 200 new nvi products That sounds amazing, but is based on 7 core devices in three concept ranges. The 200 products are made up from mapping and feature variations. These will replace the current nvi devices and will be introduced on a country by country basis. The UK devices are expected to hit the shops on January 12th.
The concept ranges are Essential; Advanced and Premium. Essential provides the 'bare essentials' the type of SatNav for when you just need to get for A to B and has 3 core models. The Advanced range adds Traffic and Guidance 2 (see later) and provides 2 base models. Premium is the top of the shop with just a single model, it has smarter design, a capacitive screen, 3D Traffic and Guidance 3.

I will be traveling Costa Rica in late November for two months. I am planning my trip now. Me and my buddies will be 4×4, surfing and hiking . We need a good Costa Rica gps map to help us hike through the jungles of Osa Peninsula, find good surfing spots along the Peninsula de Nicoya – start in Malpais then drive up to Tamarindo. I look at Costa Rica GPS maps on line but they are all just turn by turn gps devices. I need something that I can view on my PC to plan the trip then use my Garmin GPS device in Costa Rica to hike and drive on the back roads. I like traveling like a local.
