Roadtrip Route 66: 40 Reasons Not To Use Your SUV
01.08.11
We recently planned a roadtrip from Chicago to Santa Fe with a route that reminded us very much of the route taken by the Griswold’s in National Lampoons Vacation and appeared to be a wonderful opportunity to realize our thoughts on a modern sequel with a Cadillac CTS-V sport wagon. Given gas prices of north of $3.50 a gallon and the Caddy’s fuel efficiency of about 12 MPG, we quickly abandoned that plan and thought about an economic car instead: We chose the Chevy Cruze Eco, which we reviewed earlier and found to be capable of hitting 58 MPG in a rather unrealistic scenario. What MPG can you expect in the real world over the distance of almost 2700 miles?

I admit that the Cruze isn’t an obvious choice for a family vacation vehicle and we had considerable doubt whether it would be adequate and our SUV wouldn’t be the better choice. We had taken our Honda Pilot from Chicago to Santa Fe just a few weeks earlier and traveled in comfort and decent fuel efficiency – at about 23 MPG. The thought of four people (two adults, two kids) traveling in a compact car surely makes you think whether this is such a great idea.

We had learned previously that our little Garmin could not be trusted all the time as far as the opening times and actual existence of gas stations in rather remote areas is concerned. Travelling in the Eco is very basic, by today's standards,
