I want to get a GPS that has all the bells and wistles, something under $500.

A consumer magazine ratings for Garmin:
Garmin Nuvi 660 is best, but lists at $700.
Garmin Nuvi 350 is next, lists at $500.
Garmin StreetPilot c580 for $550.

Depends on what features you want. All of the Nuvi series are good. The vary in price due to the extra features like text to speech(speaking street names), mp3 player, live traffic update, extra maps like canada, multiple point routing, voice entry, etc...

I am currently using the unit of travel, so I did not use car rental company's units. It is small enough to fit in a briefcase, but the screen is large enough in a variety of conditions is obvious. Garmin's interface is the best, in my view, the majority of car's OEM equipment. I like it, in our Lexus, and my next car will not net asset value, I will use the Garmin.
