I have a Garmin Forerunner 301 and it's missing the AC adapter so I cannot charge it but it does have a usb port. What I don't understand is why I need an AC adapter to charge it when a computer can do the same thing because both have a usb support system.

USB 2.0 will supply 5V @ 0.5A. This is fine if your device needs a trickle charge. Once your Li-Ion has between discharged past a certain point, it requires more than 0.5A to initiate a charge cycle.
